4 STARS, August 16-27. Former star of The Chase, Paul Sinha, performs his stand up show The Two Ages Of Man at The Stand Comedy Club at York Place
Paul Sinha is probably most familiar from his stint on daytime TV’s The Chase where he displays his retentive skills as the “5th best quizzer in Britain” as he drily proclaims on-stage. A former doctor, his latest show takes as its title an abbreviated version of Shakespeare’s “Seven Ages of Man”, all now compressed into two stages only; he has firmly decided that as a man in early middle-age he’s in the latter category, sliding down inexorably towards death. And of course as he stands there proclaiming this with deadpan charm he looks in trim shape as the result of a diabetes scare that saw him embark on a recent healthy eating campaign.
Sinha can riff comedically on most things, he has the natural wit and perceptive eye for the inherently ridiculous that makes everyday life an endless source of inspiration. Much of his material revolves around the way he’s trying to balance his life as he tries to avoid being labelled a “Z” list celeb offered nothing but cooking or reality shows and find some inherent fulfilment in his work. From the vagaries of TV fame, his status as an openly gay comedian and love of drinking holidays, he can muse on the majority of subjects and still offer both food for thought and laughs galore.
