3 STARS, August 16-26. Maureen Lipman brings her blistering wit to the George Square Theatre
Soon to be gracing the television cobbles of Coronation Street, Maureen Lipman spent a few days in early August reminding Fringe audiences of her rollicking and incisive humour in a cabaret show that blended vividly realised comic monologues with music from Jacqui Dankworth and friends. Last seen here fifty years ago she returned with indisputable gusto to the stage.
From the scathing conversation she has with an ex about their difficult teenage daughter to an intimate check-up that goes awry, Lipman is never less than eminently watchable and sometimes sharply satirical although her sketches vary considerably in terms of quality. Concluding with a ‘modern tango’ of sorts that included some brave audience participation she unquestionably offered Edinburgh an entertaining slice of vintage wit.
