Enigma Theatre, a local company, brings the multiple award-winning Doubt: A Parable to Walton's Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre from Oct 28-31
Founded in 2012, Enigma are a fairly young theatre company, but have already had a run of well-received performances – from Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion to Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential. Now this Elmbridge-based group are returning to Riverhouse, with a Pulitzer-and-Tony-winning play from John Patrick Shanley. It's a mystery wrapped in a puzzle wrapped in an... Enigma.
Set in the 1960s, in New York's St. Nicholas Catholic School, Doubt: A Parable is a thriller filled with questions. "It'll keep you on the edge of your seat as the mystery unfolds", assures Director Stephen Willis.
"When the play is over, you will turn to the person next to you and probably discover that you've both seen something completely different; it’s very much down to your own interpretation. It’s not just about accusations, who’s right and who’s wrong; it’s about the fact that life is not black and white, there are blurred lines."
As a progressive priest clashes with a conservative nun over open principle and uncertain secrets, Enigma seeks to live up to their name and potential. "We have a fantastic cast", Stephen concludes, "and we're delighted to bring this relatively unknown work to a new audience."
Doubt: A Parable is at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre from Oct 28-31
