Christmas is a time for fun, friends and family; yet, according to Ramblers’ research, 35% of people have days over the festive period where they don’t see anyone, and 46% sometimes feel lonely.
Group walks are a simple way of changing such shocking statistics – which is why the Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks is back, taking place from December 21 to 6 January 2019. After all, what winter would be complete without a nose-tingling countryside walk – followed by a warming fireside mug of hot cocoa, of course.
During the festival, there are hundreds of walks planned around the country – but, with the magical delights of the routes outlined below to choose from, why travel that far?
1. Christmas Extravaganza
When: Saturday 22 December, 10am
Level: Moderate, 10 miles
Join the Staines Ramblers on their popular festival jaunt from Box Hill, past Denbies and through Ranmore Common to Polesden Lacy. Breath-taking views, mince pies and mulled wine a given.
2. Mickleham Christmas Cake Walk
When: Sunday 30 December, 10.30am
Level: Leisurely, 5 miles
End the year with the Epsom & Ewell Ramblers and a leisurely circular walk across the Downs towards Mickelham village, ending at the King William IV pub for coffee – and cake. Dogs welcome.
ROSS WOODHALL
3. 360 degrees of Reigate: New Year’s Day Walk
When: Tuesday 1 January, 10am
Level: Moderate, 10 miles
Get your New Year off to a healthy start with a 10-mile walk with the Mole Valley Ramblers. The hilly circuit includes Colley Hill, Wray Common, Redhill Common and Priory Park with a coffee stop en route in Reigate. Bring a picnic lunch.
