Sutton Theatres are run by Sutton Theatres Trust which was founded by theatre producer Beri Juraic and theatre-maker Micha Colombo to preserve theatres in the London Borough of Sutton. After a public campaign and series of bidding rounds, Sutton Theatres Trust has recently won the bid to take over the management of the Secombe and the Cryer from the local council.
The red brick building of The Secombe Theatre is situated on the corner of Cheam Road and Gibson Road and dates from 1937. Originally used as a church, in 1984 it was converted into The Secombe Theatre, named after the famous comedian Sir Harry Secombe. It also marks the start of theatre provision in the area. The Theatres Trust website describes the current building as “a commanding presence in the landscape”.
