The Black Horse was built in 1760, the same year that the Hanoverian George III ascended the English throne. This King George is most commonly known for the madness which blighted the later years of his reign. He is also renowned, rather unfairly, for losing the American colonies. A more positive view, sees him as an adoring husband to Queen Charlotte and a solid family man. Unusual qualities, for a monarch of the day.
In more recent years the Black Horse has been a popular refreshment stop for Reigate residents, dog walkers, golfers and as always weary travellers.
