For over two decades, Deepak Kapoor has strived to achieve a sense of family dining at his Traditional Indian – and Putney – staple, Ma Goa. Since its opening in 1993, Dee and his Mother (Ma) have continued to evolve their menu, adapting flavours and cooking with fresh ingredients procured weekly from Tooting Market. Starting out cooking only Goan cuisine, Ma Goa have branched out and now serve everything from the Street Chaats of Bombay to the comforting dishes of South India. Their only rule? Everything must be delicious!
While many Indian Restaurants now use short-cuts in their cookery, the chefs at Ma Goa are proud of the fact that each of their dishes are cooked individually, to ensure they are authentic, fresh and reminiscent of the meals the Kapoor Family enjoyed at home every evening. The Kitchen is very much a Family operation - Ma still cooks most mornings while Dee's three children contribute ideas and love to help the chefs!
In 2017, the Kapoor family did a complete overhaul of their successful eatery. Adding a craft beer tap wall and replacing the white table cloths with a stripped-back, marketplace interior, they have brought Ma Goa back to its roots: fuss-free, authentic food straight from the streets of India.
