Get training for the Spring Onion Sportive 2016, a great 65-mile cycle around Surrey in March in aid of Bike4Cancer
It’s a lot easier to clamber aboard your bicycle after a fortnight of sustained turkey and mince pie abuse if you have an early season target.
The Spring Onion sportive, which this year takes place on March 20, is a socially acceptable 65 miles in length, but factor in the 5000 feet of climbing and the Onion could very well make your eyes water.
Taking in a large portion of Surrey, from Cobham, down to Wisborough Green in West Sussex via Ranmore Common and Leith Hill, the route circles (in the shape of an onion, of course) back up through our leafy lanes near Albury and on to the final gruelling appointment of the day over Coombe Bottom.
I have recced the route, and can confirm, that yes, the Onion did put me in something of a pickle. However, when ridden with 500 other cyclists of differing abilities, with the presence of feed stops, and also the option of riding for the Bike4Cancer charity, it’ll make for a worthwhile, satisfying and fun day in the saddle.
Get training, Surrey!
