Amid manager controversy, Brentford dropped out of the Championship play-off spots with defeat at Charlton but there were home wins for Kingstonian and Leatherhead in the Ryman Premier
The speculation surrounding Brentford manager Mark Warburton’s future seems to have had a damaging effect on his team’s performance.
Beaten at home by Watford on Tuesday night, The Bees slumped to a disappointing 3-0 defeat away at Charlton Athletic on Saturday, ending their run of three successive away wins.
Goals from Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Igor Vetokele and Frederic Bulot sealed the comprehensive win for The Addicks, their first in 13 games and saw Brentford drop to seventh.
AFC Wimbledon were also defeated by League Two league leaders Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow.
A goal in each half from Liam Lawrence and Scott Vernon ensured victory for The Shrews in a game that saw Dons keeper James Shea stretchered off after 23 minutes.
In the Conference, Woking returned from Kidderminster Harriers with a point after a 1-1 draw. Yemi Odubade’s second half equaliser cancelled out Lee Hughes opener for the home side.
Sutton United went down 2-1 at home against Weston Super-Mare in the Conference South. Dan Fitchett opened the scoring for The U’s before the visitors hit back with goals from Dayle Grubb and Joe McClennan.
Charlie Penny’s last minute winner ensured Kingstonian continued their quest for a Ryman Premier League play-off spot with a 3-2 home success against Wingate and Finchley.
Malachi Hudson gave The K’s the lead before Penny struck twice, including the late goal that leaves Kingstonian within a point of fifth place.
Leatherhead beat Hampton and Richmond 3-1 at home to move up to 13th place in the division. Carl Rook opened the scoring for the home side before Charles Moone levelled for Hampton. But two second-half goals from Vasileios Karagiannis secured the points for The Tanners.
