Local music enthusiast Ian Codd brings you the roundup of events coming up in Surrey this August
August is traditionally a quiet month for concerts, as most people take a break to enjoy the summer, so there are only a few events to mention this time:
Leith Hill Place was the family home of the young Ralph Vaughan Williams and it is now owned by the National Trust. Situated on the slopes of Leith Hill and famed for its outstanding views, it opened to the public last year and is now hosting concerts and recitals. In a special workshop (10am to 4.30pm) and concert, you can explore the influence of nature on British poets and composers, including Vaughan Williams. The workshop will be presented by Stef Connor and Lisa Coates, and the price includes coffee and lunch.
9th at 10am and 6pm, workshop and concert at Leith Hill Place, £35 + £4, 07843 666874

Coming up...
Once again we have enjoyed another excellent season of music in Dorking, from a wide range of musicians - amateur and professional - and from our many choirs, orchestras, and other groups and societies that arrange concerts for us. Among the highlights of next season will be a concert of Indian classical music in October and Dorking Choral Society singing Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in November. The Indian concert, which opens the Dorking Concertgoers season, will enable us to enjoy some music from a different and very interesting culture. Further concerts include the Philharmonia Orchestra and Dante string quartet, plus three recitals featuring the cello, flute and violin. Please do attend some of these concerts - we are lucky to have so much music around us and we should make the most of it!
