Our music aficionado Ian Codd offers his pick of the best classical music being performed across Dorking this October
This October, we welcome the 21st annual Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival.
This celebration of the arts has gone from strength to strength over the years, and it now offers a wonderfully impressive range of activities. As the list below suggests, there's a huge number on offer – far too many to describe each individually.
There are concerts of classical music, jazz and folk music, choirs and brass bands, opportunities to ‘come and sing’ or take part in an open rehearsal, operas, ballets and an organ recital.
In addition, the festival includes numerous events celebrating the other arts - drama, literature, dance, painting, photography - in many venues throughout Mole Valley.
We are lucky to have such a wide range of events in Dorking and the surrounding area, so please do support as many of them as you can. Full details are in the festival brochure, available free from the Dorking Halls, council offices, libraries and shops, and on the website.

Dorking Halls will be once more playing host to some marvellous live opera and ballet screenings, from the English National Opera's Barber of Seville at the London Coliseum and the Royal Opera House's production of Mozart's famous opera The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozzi di Figaro) to the Romantic ballet Giselle, live from Moscow with Bolshoi Ballet.
For a more musical turn, Mole Valley and Horsham's own silver and brass bands will be ready to bring the roof down, and later on you can enjoy 100 Years of Jazz compressed into 99 minutes, from ragtime to modern music, by the Jazz Repertory Company.
