As The Corrs prepare for a race night gig at Epsom Downs, Sharon – one of the four siblings that make up the Irish band – tells Surrey Downs Magazine about touring and recording after a 10-year gap
- You released your album White Light last year to great acclaim. Were you surprised by the positive response from your fans after an absence of 10 years?
A We were aware that we had been missed and we poured our hearts and souls into making this new record. There are never any guarantees – you just have to do your best work and see what happens – but certainly we’ve been thrilled by the reaction. Such great reviews! And the tour was amazing too – so much love in the audience.
- Does it feel exciting to be back playing together again? What have you missed the most about being on the road?
A We laugh so much! As soon as we get together we just enjoy every moment and savour it. Making music together is very special and we missed that. Personally, I love being on the road too. It’s like this bubble of creativity and you get to live outside the routine, which I adore.
- Your first gig after 10 years was an outdoor show in Hyde Park. Now you are playing Epsom Downs as the finale to an evening of racing. Do you enjoy outdoor gigs? How do they compare with indoor arenas?
A All gigs are amazing – performing is the greatest feeling in the world! Hyde Park was so special. We had 60,000 people singing along to Runaway, our most popular and successful song, and it was the most incredible sensation. I think we all started to well up at that point.
- You also undertook a massive arena tour for the record. What’s the crowd reaction been like this time around? Are you seeing a lot of familiar faces, or is it mainly new fans that have discovered your music recently?
A Both, actually, which is great. We seem to have held on to our old fans and made some new ones too. The crowd reaction has been amazing. As a band we’ve matured a lot and I think the crowd can really feel how much we love what we’re doing. That’s infectious – there truly is nothing like making music and performing it to an enthusiastic crowd.
- You’re playing both Epsom and Newmarket this summer. What is it that you enjoy about playing racecourses?
A Great crowds. They are already having a wonderful time before you get there and they invariably love a good gig.
- Are you planning anything special for the summer outdoor shows? What exactly can fans look forward to?
A They’ll hear all our hits, as well as songs from White Light. We’ll also include a small acoustic section which is very organic and makes for a special moment every night.
- Have you visited Surrey before? Do you have any particular memories or anecdotes?
A Yes, the countryside is very beautiful. Gorgeous little perfectly preserved towns and delicious gastropubs with local produce.
