Guildford Shakespeare Company Summer Camp
Best for: drama
Older children (ages 12-18) can attend The Tempest week (July 31 – August 4), during which they will rehearse and perform their own version of the play. For younger children (aged 7-13) there’s a chance to perform Romeo and Juliet the following week (August 7-11). In each case, a final performance for family and friends will take place on Friday afternoon.
Highly recommended – teenagers are welcome and all children have a speaking role and a say in how the play is delivered. It’s educational and superb for boosting confidence.

For youngsters that love to perform, the school is hosting two three-day summer holiday courses open to children aged 4-11 of all abilities.
Top-class instructors will teach dance, musical theatre, singing, stagecraft and audition techniques – throwing in some arts and crafts to boot – with a final performance for parents at the end of the course.
A lovely camp for aspiring young performers that comes highly recommended.

The Action Club starts with a one-hour free run lesson that focuses on balance, jumping, landing, vaulting and flipping. This is followed by a two-hour skateboard lesson where kids learn to push and navigate alongside tricks like pump on the ramp and drop in. Each participant will receive lots of beginner tips and improvement techniques with assistants on hand.

Each day there are six one-hour sessions, with at least two activities to choose from in each session. The Skills Builder courses include Motor Mania (road safety, signals and basic mechanics), Swim School (for beginners), Lab Rats (science experiments) and Upstage (drama workshops).

Big Top Adventures is an excursion-based camp that takes 8-12-year-olds out and about to different places in London (and sometimes to Brighton). The format changes weekly, but popular activities include boating on the Serpentine lake, visits to Battersea Park Children’s Zoo and the Charles Dickens Museum and swimming locally in Pools on the Park.
For younger ones (3-7-year-olds), the Barnes Summer Play School is a site-based camp where daily activities include French and Spanish lessons, playdough, dressing up and yoga.

For those with children interested in learning how to perform, Stagecoach is running age-appropriate holiday clubs.
Younger children (4-6-year-olds) can join the Little Performers Workshop, singing, dancing and acting all week and putting on a performance on the Friday. Older children (aged 7-18) can sign up for the Summer Holiday Workshop, which offers long hours of singing, dancing and acting.

Best for: Nerf Gun shooting and forest fun
Kids will spend their days shooting Nerf guns, making campfires and setting traps and snares, as well as trying out archery, bushcraft, nature art and shelter building and generally having fun in a forest.
Highly recommended by all ages, particularly as kids get to make a campfire and then cook their own sausages over it (snacks and lunch included in the price). Siblings and friends can be grouped together. However, as it’s an outdoor-based camp, send them prepared.

Best for: budding movie makers
The Sparks team has been running movie-making courses for children since 2010. Its hands-on Summer Shoot is a chance to get both behind and in front of the camera, planning, shooting and producing a short film over five days, with a red carpet screening for friends and family in September. Groups consist of no more than 20 (with two adults) and are age-tiered.

Best for: dedicated sports courses for those aged 16 and under
For anyone with sports-mad kids, Activate Camps offers specialised coaching courses covering cricket, hockey, netball, multisports, tennis, gymnastics and lacrosse. Guildford Sports Centre is the venue for Activate’s three-day Netball Fever and two-day Louis Smith Gymnastics Experience Academies.
While the academies provide excellent focused coaching and are very popular with teens, the courses only run for two or three days and may consequently require some juggling with other providers if you are hoping for a full week’s worth of childcare.

Best for: watersports for older children
For 8-13 year-olds that love the water, Aqua Sports offers a range of activities including windsurfing, dinghy sailing, paddle sports, raft building and racing, plus team games throughout the holidays. Teenagers (14-17) are offered the same watersports, but during dedicated weeks (dates tbc).
This is definitely a fun option; and, as children are promised at least two water sessions per day, they can work towards their personal goals in various sports. There is also the option of booking individual days. Not a cheap camp, but worth the expense.

Each week small groups take on a different show –this year it’s The Jungle Book, Charlotte’s Web, Alice in Winterland, The Railway Children and Much Ado About Nothing. There are less structured shorter courses too for younger children (from 7 years) with games and storytelling.
Play-in-a-Week courses are suitable for 10-15 years and cost £200; two and three-day courses are £100-£140, July 30-Sept

The Hawthorns Sports Centre

The Sports Centre (part of The Hawthorns School) runs Mega Days offering arts and crafts, cooking, judo, swimming, cricket and more. The wide variety of activities, including the enticement of a pool, makes this a very appealing option.

Elmbridge Council runs six weeks of sports and arts camps for 5-13 years as well as several one-day events for younger children such as animal art and craft days, Teddy Bear Picnics, play days and a Big Dig, Sow and Grow gardening days at the Cobham Community Garden.

Energy Kidz Holiday Club
Best for: all types
Whether they love science, action games or arts and crafts, children are encouraged to try something new. The clubs follow a weekly schedule that revolves around a free choice of activities. Breaks and snacks are slotted in throughout the day.
Location in Balham as well.
