Located in the heart of the Cornish countryside, Camp Kernow is an off-grid, residential summer camp for seven to 14-year-olds. The award-winning, not-for-profit camp champions digital detoxing and the importance of connecting with nature through hands-on experience. Sustainable living is at the heart of camp’s ethos and campers are inspired to explore actions they can take to make a positive difference in the world.
Campers throughout the six-days can exchange the everyday normality for off-grid adventure, with a range of outdoor activities on offer including technical tree climbing, eco-energy workshops, green woodworking, forging, foraging, kayaking, dusk bat walking, falconry, archery, silk screen printing, leatherwork and stone carving.
Sleeping arrangements eschew the traditional tent in favour of low impact timber/canvas structures including yurts, tipis, geo-domes, bell tent, an upturned boat hull and tree tent accommodation.
Campers will also have the opportunity to build their own shelter in the woods and feast under the stars on campfire cooked cuisine. Forest bathing workshops will also take place, allowing children to practice the art of mindfulness and meditation in the sanctuary of Camp Kernow’s ancient woodland and trees.
New features of the camp this year include beehives and solar-powered cinema nights - who doesn't love outdoor cinemas?
Camp’s field to fork ethos will continue to be at the forefront with an extensive array of fresh, organic fruit and veg available for campers to harvest from the kitchen garden and polytunnel. These ingredients - supplemented with locally sourced produce - will be turned into delicious home-cooked meals served up by the campers themselves (who also take it in turn to wash-up). Cob oven pizza making will once again take centre stage in the culinary delights on offer.
The residential camps are six days in duration, with 2019 dates as follows:
- 28 July – 2 August (for 10-15-year-olds only)
- 4 – 9 August
- 11 – 16 August
- 18 – 23 August
The six-day camps cost £520 with a 5% discount on sibling bookings.
Supporting sustainability, children are encouraged to travel to and from camp on train, bus, coach or even boat. At a small extra cost, a popular chaperone service to and from London Paddington and Truro is available to safely escort fellow campers to and from camp.
