Sadly, we must report that Fanny Maiklem, founder of Fanny's Farm Shop in Merstham, passed away just before the weekend on June 5. The 66 year-old had been battling cancer for some time, and our thoughts go to her family
A local legend at the heart of Surrey's food scene, Fanny Maiklem founded her eponymous Farm Shop in 1979 by selling vegetables and flowers out of a barrow in front of her shop.
Since then, Fanny's Farm Shop has gone from strength to strength, becoming famed throughout the region for its delicious homemade food and cheerful atmosphere - in no small part down to the presence of Fanny herself.
She was well-known for her appearances on radio stations across the South Counties, sharing her winning charm and expertise - particularly her award-winning skill with marmalades.
In the past, we've recommended Fanny's Farm for its delicious cream teas, sumptuous marmalade (for toast, cakes, and even sausages!) and seasonal homemade treats - just this Easter our Craft and Country editor enjoyed hot cross buns, Easter cupcakes and delicious Simnel cake.
Fanny Maiklem will be sorely missed, but we've no doubt that the Farm Shop bearing her name will remain a top spot for anyone looking to refuel this summer.
