Earlier this year, Caitriona Marron ruminated on the influence of RC Sherriff, the Esherplaywright who captured the Great War. Now his papers have been catalogued, and are open for perusal
RC Sherriff reached the rank of captain in the First World War, and used his experiences to fuel a writing career that included numerous acclaimed plays and movies, from Goodbye Mr. Chips to The Dambusters to his very first professional effort, A Journey's End.
All told, the papers held by the Surrey History Centre amounted to more than 100 full boxes, meaning it's been a year's hard work for project archivist Zoe Karens. Still, she can be proud of a job well done - they're now all fully catalogued for researchers to browse online, and get a better picture of this remarkable man.
To peruse the papers yourself, just go to SURCAT, the Surrey History Centre's online archive. Click 'Advanced Search' and select 'Catalogue'. The relevant reference numbers are 2332, 3813 and 9314.
