The bestselling author of How to Train Your Dragon and The Wizards of Once comes to Dorking Halls
Cressida Cowell, bestselling author and illustrator of the How to Train Your Dragon books - now a blockbuster film trilogy - will be visiting Dorking Halls in February for the culmination of the ReadingZone Festival 2018.
ReadingZone is a local organisation that aims to help inspire children to read for pleasure. More than 3,500 children at schools in Dorking, Reigate and Epsom will take part in author events during the ReadingZone Festival, which is running until February 3.
Among the visiting authors will be Absolute Radio breakfast show host Christian O' Connell, as well as award-winning author Christopher Edge and comic creator Gary Northfield.
The festival will close with a public event featuring author Cressida Cowell introducing her new series, The Wizards of Once, at Dorking Halls on Saturday February 3 from 2.30pm – 3.30pm. The event is aimed at children aged eight to 12 years and tickets are £7 each.
Cowell, who has been writing The Wizards of Once – about the relationship between a young boy Wizard and his enemy, a young female Warrior – for five years alongside her How to Train Your Dragon books, said that her new series was inspired by her childhood visits to her grandmother in West Sussex. She explained: “Behind the house where we stayed as children was an Iron Age hill fort called The Trundle. There was no sign saying, ‘this is a 3,000 year old hill fort’ - we used to toboggan down it - but it's huge and you can see how the landscape could have inspired legends that giants once possessed this land. Who else could have created these massive hills, and monuments like Stonehenge, but giants?”
The books are aimed at readers aged eight to 12 years and the Chiswick-based author will be talking about her new series and signing copies of The Wizards of Once at her event in Dorking.
