Security company Banham – headed by Guildford's Charles Hallatt – celebrates its 90th anniversary this month, reports Nikki Ackerley
De rigueur for security, I first came across Banham gates at our basement apartment in Kensington back in the early 1980s – clearly, property prices were somewhat different in those days.
What I didn’t know then, of course, is that Banham’s current chairman Charles – grandson of its founder William Banham – lives in Guildford, and he is celebrating his family’s company’s 90th anniversary this year.
Established in 1926, Banham invented the first automatic door bolt – a pioneering initiative in the security industry. It's now a household name in residential and commercial security, yet the company remains privately owned, with turnover in excess of £30m. Its new HQ in Earlsfield has been designed by Allies and Morrison – architects of Guildford's own masterplan.
It will also be opening its Banham Academy later this year. As a long-standing supporter of apprenticeships, it will now offer on-site training and skills to young people between the ages of 16-23 seeking employment within the industry.
