The Victoria
The Victoria, High St, Oxshott, Leatherhead KT22 0JR
Conveniently located on Oxshott's High Street is The Victoria, the tenth pub to launch under the wing of the White Brasserie Company. They provide a contemporary dining experience that combines British and French cuisine, which includes quality meats from local butchers.
The Victoria is undoubtedly a snug and familiar spot. As I enter, I notice the seat by the fire is free and it's the perfect place to enjoy a drink before you dine. The bar offers a welcoming and cosy atmosphere that might be expected from a traditional pub, but it's steeped in character, tracking the history of the pub back to the early 1800s. The timber beams, comfortable armchairs and log fire create an inviting space to enjoy local ales and craft beer, as well as an endless supply of doggy biscuits and water bowls. This leads me to think, that perhaps after a nice walk on the common (which is just around the corner) that The Victoria is the perfect place to end an afternoon.
The brasserie upholds the pub’s atmosphere while offering a modern fine dining experience. The extensive seasonal menu ensures that there is no lack of choice, with several vegetarian and vegan options available. The knowledgeable and attentive staff are on hand throughout to advise and to offer recommendations, with expert knowledge of the menu and which wines to pair with each dish.
A set menu is available from Monday to Saturday until 6.30 pm, offering two courses for £12.95 or three courses for an additional £3.50, which changes monthly depending on what ingredients are best in season at that time. The younger children’s menu offers a main, side and dessert for £6.95, while for older children half-price dishes are available.
Every Sunday a roast is available, and the roast beef is the most tender cut of meat you'll find around. Every week regulars flock down to enjoy the famous beef, which is on their reduced Sunday set menu, a 2 course for £20 offer, with a third added for £25.
In keeping with the communal and traditional setting on which the pub and management rightly pride themselves on, The Victoria has recently put on a ‘meet the neighbour’ event which will soon be renamed the “Oxshott Social”. This offers a chance for friends and neighbours to get together in a welcoming setting and is held every three to four months in what is arguably the pub’s crown jewel; the garden tipi. Equipped with a fire pit, seating areas and sound system, the tipi is accessible all year round, with its own food menu and gin bar.
The Victoria benefits from a passionate and professional staff. Head chef Paul has managed the kitchen for nearly three years and has a Michelin star background. Assistant managers Michael and Emily have years of hospitality and events management and marketing experience respectively, while general manager Mark’s years of experience in hospitality management led to him joining The Victoria’s team.
With so much to offer all year round, surely this is one of Surrey’s top gastro pubs. Welcoming to families, including dogs, delicious food and friendly, enthusiastic staff means The Victoria is one not to be left off the list.
