Our verdict
Set just below Farnham Castle on Castle Hill, the Giggling Squid offers the perfect spot to enjoy a laid-back lunch or special occasion supper.
Housed in one of the market town’s historic buildings, the restaurant itself combines traditional Surrey farmhouse with fresh and floral tones, instantly instilling a sense of warmth and light.
My guest and I visited on a Saturday lunchtime, where you are presented with a choice of menus: a dedicated lunch option or a slightly more expensive (and expansive) evening offer.
The midday menu has a fabulous ‘Thai Tapas’ selection, which is great for lighter options or sharing. Items are also available for inclusion elsewhere and can be built into your order.
The comprehensive menus feature ‘spice’ ratings on each dish and are clearly marked to let diners know what suits vegetarian or vegan diets. Prices range from £5.95 to £9 for starters, and mains are around £13.95 to £17. There is also an array of accompanying rice and noodle styles, while the knowledgeable and attentive staff are on hand to ensure dishes and sides are paired to perfection.
Starters
As a starter, I opted for Spring Rolls – although a staple of Thai or Chinese cooking, a lot can go wrong. However, the Giggling Squid offering did not disappoint, combining a light, crisp outer that was partly open, exposing a packed inner of perfectly cooked shredded vegetables.
My guest plumped for the Salt & Pepper Squid. One of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, the generous portion of crispy coated seafood is complemented by a sweet dipping sauce. Judging by the time it took to eat, I would say it was incredibly tasty!
Mains
We plumped for a Red Thai Curry and a Wholesome Cashew Stir Fry for the main course. Both dishes are suitable for vegetarians but also come with a beef, chicken or prawn option.
Again the food was delicious – served piping hot with just the right amount of heat, enhancing rather than overpowering the flavours. The Stir Fry was packed with a raft of tasty ingredients – including generous amounts of roasted cashew nuts, mushrooms, onions and peppers.
Having been served prawn crackers, which incidentally also come with a sweet chilli dipping sauce, while we made our menu selections, we had not left space for a dessert. However, a fine choice is on offer, including Caramelised Mango Cake, Melting Heart Chocolate Dessert and a selection of sweet and fruity ice cream and sorbets. Sadly, I was driving, or I would have indulged in a Dessert Cocktail which combine elements of Thai puddings with liquors.
Instead, we opted for tea, which came beautifully served and proved the perfect end to a lovely lunch.
I cannot recommend the Giggling Squid in Farnham highly enough.
From the friendliness of the staff and fabulous food to the elegance of the interior, there is a warm, welcoming atmosphere that will ensure you have a great dining experience. I will be back...
