A good farm shop is a haven of all things fresh, local and delicious; a place where ethical, artisanal food and drink draws people from all over the region who seek culinary pleasures that no supermarket can ever match. We’re absolutely spoiled for choice in Surrey when it comes to farm shops, and here is my whistle-stop tour around the finest.

Applegarth Farm Shop

The shop has a full time, classically trained cook producing a range of ready meals, puddings, quiches, pies and tarts. You’ll find the Butchers Hall & Country Grocer next to the popular Parrot Inn in the village of Forest Green. Serving locally and ethically reared meat, you’ll find all the accoutrements you could hope for.

Crockford Bridge Farm Shop
Paul and Caroline Smith have farmed at Crockford Bridge in Addlestone for over 25 years. They grow more than 20 different crops of fruit and vegetables for their pick-your-own and farm shop. Formerly known as Pyles Farm, the estate was once owned by the Locke-King family of Woburn Park and Brooklands fame.

Flower Farm Shop
Oxted Road, Surrey, Rh98bpOpened in 2003, Flower Farm Shop expanded an already thriving traditional mixed farm. Farmed by the Deeley family since the 1970s, they rear pigs, chickens, turkeys and sheep. Flower Farm has also offered pick-your-own crops since 1975, there’s a lovely tea room and Godstone Vineyard can be found next door.

The Reeds Road, Surrey, GU103BPA huge department within the garden centre grounds has been transformed into an Aladdin's cave of pure indulgence and irresistible temptations. The alluring aroma of fresh, baked bread in the morning, fully complimented by locally sourced jams and preserves is just one of the many reasons to visit.

Garsons Farm Shop
The biggest pick-your-own farm in the country, Garsons has always championed local food and, wherever possible, produce for their farm shop is sourced from growers in Surrey and the surrounding area. As well as winning best farm shop and independent retailer of the year at the Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards 2015, they have recently opened a new restaurant.

Kingfisher Farm Shop
Abinger Hammer, Surrey, RH5 6QXMost famous for its home grown watercress, this family business has been growing this uniquely English product at Abinger Hammer since 1854. The Farm Shop has become an increasingly important part of the business and the former watercress shed became the present shop in 1999.

London Road, Surrey, GU195JBThe Food Hall at the popular garden centre sells fresh bread and Free From products, plus a range of chutneys, preserves and biscuits that are not stocked in local supermarkets. Fruit and vegetables are delivered fresh from the market at least three times a week and there is also a butchers and delicatessen counter run by the award-winning family firm Bevan’s, offering a wide range of meats, poultry, game and delicatessen specialities made to traditional family recipes.

Whitmoor Lane, Surrey, GU4 7QAIf you live in either Woking or Guildford, getting to Noel Dobson’s Farm Shop is a doddle – it’s halfway between on the Woking Road at the excellent Sutton Green Garden Centre. With fresh daily bread; fruit and veg - much of which has been grown on the site’s 16 acre farm; local free range meat and a fantastic deli… who needs a supermarket?

Priory Farm
A regular Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards finalist, Priory Farm Shop is a treasure-trove of beautiful produce and unusual items. Bought by John and Wendy Shinner in 1957, it was a traditional working farm until 1992 but, now run by their son Nic, has since added many strings to its bow. One of the county’s must-visit destinations, they also have a fantastic Discovery Trail to keep the kids occupied.

Secretts
Something of a Surrey powerhouse, Secretts’ seasonal crops are harvested fresh every day and find their way on to restaurant and pub tables across the county and further afield. This family company was founded in 1908 by Frederick Augustus Secrett, and has been growing speciality vegetables and salads since 1937. As well as the farm shop, which was once the stables for the farm’s shire horses, there’s the excellent Eliza’s Teashop.

Shabden Park Farm
High Road, Surrey, CR5 3SFLocated within a Surrey Wildlife Trust protected site, Shabden Park Farm uses traditional farming methods for the benefit of the countryside and its wildlife habitats. Particularly proud of their meat and tracklements (meat accompaniments), their shop is packed full of locally produced sauces, mustards and chutneys. They host a farmers’ market on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Village Greens Farm Shop
