From sun drenched green spaces to riverside patios, Victoria Chapman goes in search of the best pub beer gardens in Surrey and SW London
Summer is nigh – days get longer, the weather gets better, and naturally that's all the justification we need to go out, drink and be merry.
As soon as the temperature rises and the sun peaks through the thick cloud which normally resides over England all-year round, we Brits instinctively gather our friends and family, run to the nearest beer garden and down a cider or two quicker than you can say 'Kopparberg'.
It's a definitively British obsession with beer gardens during the season we refer to as 'summer' (commonly known to be the three days during the month of July where there's no rain and, heaven forbid, we actually have a few rays in the sky before the winter weather ensues the following week)
With that in mind, we may as well make the most of the sun while it lasts, right?
I have spent many an afternoon researching (drinking) the best beer gardens in Surrey and SW London, compiling them in to a list of the top 50 – you can thank me later.

The stunning views from the lakeside terrace, the unique tapas menu and quaint afternoon tea truly makes this pub and its charming landscape a hidden treasure. 3
The Leather Bottle
With freshly decorated shepherd shacks, newly refurbished beach huts, new wine and summer menus as well as a 'Burger Shack' in the garden Friday to Sunday, The Leather Bottle is a perfect example of a beer garden done properly.
Even just looking at this photo makes me feel all summery, awaking a strong desire to grab some cold ciders out in the sun with friends – the picture speaks for itself, need I say more?
-
4
The Brickmakers
With an elegant bar and refined outdoor space, The Brickmakers Pub offers a classy atmosphere where you can enjoy an eclectic variety of wine and champagne, or, if you're the nominated driver, a fine array of labelled teas and coffees to quench your thirst responsibly.

The Avalon
The Avalon is the definition of gorgeous. From its stunning living wall to its beanbags and decking area, it's classy with some tasteful splashes of colour.
The decking proves to be a charming, secluded haven to enjoy a beer under the glorious sunshine in the summer with family and friends, where you can chill out on the beanbags during lazy Sundays after you've eaten too much roast dinner (we all do it!).

6
The Prince
14 Lillie Rd, West Brompton Crossing, Kensington, SW6 1TT
The Prince broadly boasts the largest pub garden in London. The colourful decor gives the place character like I've never experienced before. It's the perfect place for anyone to go – kids, friends, family, a loved one, everyone will enjoy The Prince.
They screen live sports in this pub and the weather doesn't matter – with its clear and retractable roofing, it keeps the sun in and the rain out so you can enjoy a pint with friends or watch the game, come rain or shine.

7
The Ivy Chelsea Garden
It's classy, it's luxurious, so it's naturally everything you would expect from a Chelsea restaurant. Now I know this isn't technically a 'pub beer garden', but I absolutely had to add it to my list (look at the place – can you really blame me?)
The picture really does speak for itself in showing the restaurant's elegance and sophistication; it's stunning from the moment you walk through the door, all the way through to its charming garden. Whether you're out with your family and want to go somewhere a bit 'nicer' than usual, or you're just shopping in local boutiques with friends, this venue is an absolute must if you're in the area.

8
The Magic Garden
This pub makes me want to grab a mini skirt, throw some flowers in my hair and get my hippie on – I'd honestly struggle to find a reason not to go here.
With a fairy-lit garden, comfy sofas sheltered under a tarpaulin, this pub creates a fun peace and love festival vibe to enjoy bar snacks and drinks in. They even have hot water bottles and blankets for when it gets nippy. It's the perfect blend of cosy and comfortable, with eccentric and unique touches galore.

9
The Eagle
With fairy-lit trees, and benches under electrical heaters to keep you warm at night, this garden always proves an atmospheric visit. The garden includes a Burger Shack where people can have meaty (or veggie) magnificence cooked right in front of them, whilst relaxing with a cold beer in the garden. If a burger's not for you, they also offer a garden picnic menu to enjoy alongside their lunch and dinner menus too.
The shabby chic interior provides a comfortable, homely experience for you to enjoy meals in the restaurant, live sports footage throughout the year and quiz nights during the month.

10
The Duke of Cambridge
Imported from Château Carbonneau in Bordeaux, The Duke of Cambridge offers an array of crafted wines from their family-run vineyard, with fresh meat and vegetables sourced and delivered by local, British farmers. There's a large patio, garden, heated barn and kid's playground, along with extra perks to create your own unique pub experience – reward cards, willow weaving workshops out in the garden and, my personal favourite, 'Gin Wednesdays'.
-
11
The Grove
Being a stone's throw away from the River Thames is not the only advantage to this pub. The Grove delights its visitors with a patio area, but more excitingly, a 'secret' garden surrounded by greenery, providing a fashionable alternative for those of you who may prefer a more intimate, less traditional beer garden experience. There's also a 'secret DJ app' where you can add your favourite songs to the live digital jukebox in the pub.
The garden is serviced by its own outside bar, so no more designated drink collector having to traipse back inside and queue for ages to get drinks for their friends (if that's usually you, I feel your pain).
-

The Mill
Farnham Road, Elstead, GU8 6LESituated right in the heart of Surrey, overlooking the River Wey, The Mill is the embodiment of Surrey's beauty. The pub functioned as a corn mill until the late 18th Century, until it was repurposed for using braids for military uniforms in the 19th Century.
