Even as a vegetarian of two decades, I never thought that I’d see the day when veganism was considered mainstream. But here we are. Supermarket shelves are now so well stocked with alternative products that planning even just one meat and dairy-free meal per week is as easy as (vegan) pie. There’s plenty out there for those wanting to be a bit more adventurous, too.
1. Find some inspiration
Cooking from scratch need not be a problem thanks to the cornucopia of resources available. Vegan bloggers Bosh are hugely popular (watch their cooking videos on bosh.tv). Or, sign up to Veganuary and receive a free cookbook stuffed with recipes loved by the likes of Beyoncé, Colin Firth and Pamela Anderson.
2. Delicious dairy alternatives
Guildford-based nut butter business Bnutz is one local producer flying the vegan flag. Founder Bianca Avory is an inspirational advocate for a plant-based diet, who has made the change for health reasons. Her delicious (palm-oil free) nut butter – “ideal for stirring, spreading, blending, drizzling, dolloping or eating straight out of the jar” – can be bought from a variety of local suppliers including Godalming Deli, The Dabbling Duck in Shere and Food for Thought (branches in Kingston and Guildford). There are many wonderful recipes on her website including the one for Vegan Rainbow Pancakes, which are our favourite!
As Bianca says: “If you are missing certain foods just be kind to yourself and remember that habits take time to change”.
3. Get baking
Creative Nature’s baking kits are free from refined sugar and the top 14 allergens (including sesame seeds and nuts), as well as being vegan and organic – we are huge fans in my house. Based in Weybridge, the company has gone from strength to strength under the stewardship of one of Surrey’s top businesswomen, Julianne Ponan. And it's available in all the good supermarkets.
4. Do your research before you eat out
While many chains now offer gluten-free and vegan dishes, some research before heading out is vital. The Willow in Kingston is a must-visit for those looking for truly free-from cooking as it caters for all manner of dietary requirements from vegan to paleo. Incidentally, the ‘food as medicine’ specialist has just scooped four golds at the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards 2018. Also, for a true dining-out experience, London House in West Byfleet has been hosting dedicated vegan tasting menu evenings that sound superb.
5. Be prepared for when you're on the move
There’ll be lots of vegan alternatives in the shops this month, but my favourite is this limited-edition “Losing your vegan’ity” lunch box from Itsu (below, £4.99 from itsu.com. Not only is it packed with protein-rich edamame beans and organic beech-smoked tofu, but it’s also got the catchiest name going!
