Living there

I rented a flat in early 1960s Rent six guineas a week .Was single then working at Heathrow in Police service ......then after I married. My wife was with BOAC ....I recall being unable to move from the front door to the bridge to get off the island to go on duty as the river in flood had risen up the steps .Trees and all sorts of stuff was passing by in the water....I had the best excuse the Police Station recorded when I phoned in late.... Trapped in the house by the Thames .....So delighted to see the place restored..... wonderful

Our flat for 2 years!!

My husband and myself moved into flat no 11, the day after we were married. It was the top floor on the right hand side, we lived there from 1975-1977, it was lovely in the summer but very cold and damp in the winter. Our rent was £10 a week! I have some very happy memories of living there. If anyone came to visit they would ring a bell on the towpath, you would stick your head out of a window and ask if the visitor was for you, if it was, you had to go down and open the gate for them to come over the bridge. Great fun!!

D'Oyly Carte renovation

On our walks along the Thames during Covid lockdowns, my wife and I could see there was some activity on the island.
We had know that it has been the home of Richard D'Oyly Carte, and were so sad to see its run-down condition.
I had been brought up on G&S since a child, performed in a couple of their operettas at school, and played in orchestras for some.
Unfortunately, we were in the throws of moving to Yorkshire and indeed moved just before it opened to the public.
The transformation is incredible, and we hope that we might be able to return some day to experience for ourselves.

Wonderful D’Oyly Carte Island Restoration

So happy to see the beautiful Island and it’s history coming back to life. Congratulations Andy on your foresight and enthusiasm to restore this Beautiful Historic site. Will look forward to streaming the concerts when they happen, plus visiting for coffees.

D’Oyly Carte Island

I lived on a houseboat moored on the Island in the 1950’s. There was a chain ferry to get back and forth.

D’Oyly cart

Best news ever to see this beautifull house and grounds restored even better to share with the community . Weybridge totally lacks community . The man should be honoured for his vision
